Earthquake Insurance

Earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 6 can cause damage to your home. There are various kinds of earthquakes or movement of the ground. You don’t have to be living near or on a fault line anymore to suffer damage and feel the ground shake. Earthquake damage is generally not covered in your homeowner’s policy. Don’t assume that you will rely on government disaster programs. How much earthquake insurance you need will depend on the individual situation and the cost of rebuilding the home. Earthquake insurance will protect your investment and repair damages due to an earthquake. If your home is uninhabitable due to an earthquake, you may get additional living expenses to live somewhere else while the insurance company rebuilds your home. This way, if you are still paying your mortgage for your destroyed home, at least someone else is paying for a place for you to live. Only about 10 percent of Californians purchase earthquake insurance. Only you can come to a decision as to whether or not it’s worth paying for earthquake insurance. One thing for sure is that is very difficult to predict when an earthquake will occur. I would recommend doing research on EQ companies and finding out the actual cost of earthquake insurance for your home.

  1. Read your post. Did you hear about that earthquake in California? I live in Washington and I wonder if there’s anything to worry about. Thanks in advance for your answer.

    1. Hello Quinn,

The earthquake magnitude was 7.1 and there were some homes that got damaged, but no deaths reported. Thank you for concerns and sorry for the late response.
